Is Laser Hair Removal Right for Me? By William P. Baugh on April 07, 2014

Fullerton Laser Hair Removal CandidatesFor both men and women, unwanted hair growth can compromise a patient’s desired aesthetics and leave them constantly battling for smooth, bare skin. Traditional hair removal treatments such as waxing, shaving, and hair removal creams can be messy, inconvenient, and even painful. Not only that, but these treatments require frequent repeating that is really just a never ending cycle. For those of his patients who are good candidates for treatment, dermatologist William P. Baugh offers the ideal solution. Dr. Baugh’s Fullerton patients can undergo laser hair removal treatment. This treatment effectively eliminates hair from even large areas of the body in a procedure that is safe, gentle, and long lasting.

Any patient who has patches of unwanted hair is a possible candidate for laser hair removal. Our cosmetic lasers are able to treat multiple hairs at once so they are even effective on larger areas of the body. Laser hair removal treatment can treat unwanted hair on areas of the body including:

  • Face
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Stomach

Just about any area of the body can be treated with laser hair removal. One notable exception is the eyes. For patients with unwanted hair around or between the eyes, commonly referred to as a “unibrow”, laser hair removal is not recommended. This area of the face is better suited to more traditional hair removal methods such as tweezing or waxing.

Another requirement for patients who would like to undergo laser hair removal is that the hair be pigmented. This means that the hair needs to have color in order for the laser to “see” the hair follicles and effectively treat the area. The best results will be on patients with dark hair follicles and light colored skin. However, laser hair removal treatment can be effective on patients with varying degrees of hair and skin pigmentation as long as the patient’s hair is not white or extremely light.

Finally, ideal candidates for laser hair removal treatment should have realistic expectations. A single laser treatment can effectively slow hair growth or make hair come in thinner and lighter. However, for long-term results, patients will require multiple appointments. We often recommend a series of treatments over several months. The number of treatments needed to reach a patient’s desired results will vary for each patient and will be largely affected by the patient’s hair and skin pigmentation.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

For our patients who are ideal candidates for laser hair removal, the benefits are plenty. Laser hair removal can leave skin bare and smooth so that patients achieve their desired aesthetics without painful and inconvenient upkeep. Laser hair removal is safe, fast, and gentle, like shaving, but with long-term results that do not require daily or weekly repetition.
