Minimally Invasive Treatments for Jowls By William P. Baugh on February 02, 2015

Close-up of a woman’s jaw line after treatment for jowlsA person might be able to cover up fine lines and other premature signs of aging with make-up for a while, but there is no way to conceal jowls when they begin to form. Many people who are uncomfortable with their appearance due to the formation of jowls feel that invasive plastic surgery procedures such as facelift are the only options available to them if they want to turn back the clock. However, minimally invasive alternatives such as dermal fillers and SmartLipo® can produce equally excellent if not superior results, all without the need for lengthy incisions or visible scarring.

At Full Spectrum Dermatology, the dermatological practice of William P. Baugh, M.D. in Fullerton, treatment for jowls can be accomplished through the use of dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® or through SmartLipo®, the advanced body contouring procedure that allows for the safe, precise removal of fat deposits. Which method of treating the jowls is best suited to your unique case? The best way to find out is to meet with Dr. Baugh for a one-on-one, confidential consultation at his office at your earliest convenience.

Dermal Fillers

Jowls begin to form when fat accumulates in the lower cheek, which, combined with the loss of fullness in the upper cheek area, causes the lower cheek to sag past the jaw. As the skin loses its natural flexibility and becomes increasingly lax, the jowls become more pronounced until they pose a serious cosmetic issue.

Dermal fillers work by plumping up hollow areas of the face with a filler substance; in the case of JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, this substance is based in hyaluronic acid, a protein that occurs naturally in the human body. This protein attracts and absorbs water, making it an ideal, long-lasting filler. When JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® is strategically injected into hollow upper cheeks, it can help to straighten jaw lines and lift jowls, restoring a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers are particularly effective in treating jowls that have just begun to form.

SmartLipo®

For cases involving moderate to advanced jowls, dermal fillers alone may not produce the desired results. In these cases, SmartLipo® may be recommended. SmartLipo® can safely be used to remove excess fat from the lower cheeks and dramatically reduce the appearance of jowls. It can also be used to remove isolated deposits of fat from elsewhere on the jaw and neck for more comprehensive rejuvenation of the lower face. If desired, SmartLipo® treatment of the jowls can be combined with dermal filler injections in the upper cheeks to produce the best, longest-lasting results possible.

The most suitable candidates for jowl treatment with SmartLipo® will have good skin elasticity, as the cosmetic improvement of their jaw lines will be dependent upon their skin’s ability to conform to its new contours after fat removal.
