Every year, the number of cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the United States is documented by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The 2017 data offers important insight into cosmetic procedure trends across our nation, including anti-aging treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers.

Dr. William Baugh, a dermatologist in Fullerton, CA, reviews BOTOX and soft tissue filler statistics below based on the ASPS stats. The data sheds light on the growing popularity of these minimally-invasive treatments and why you may want to receive them.

The Trends in Minimally-invasive Anti-aging Treatments

The 2017 data shows that each of the top five minimally-invasive procedures targeted the face. Nearly 16 million cosmetic minimally-invasive treatments were performed in 2017.

The top five were mostly anti-aging therapies and included:

  1. BOTOX Cosmetic
  2. Dermal fillers
  3. Chemical peel
  4. Laser hair removal
  5. Microdermabrasion

BOTOX Popularity

While the popularity of facial rejuvenation procedures continues to grow, BOTOX in particular has really taken off. The year 2017 saw the most botulinum toxin type A injections to date, with over 7.2 million treatments. This is a 2 percent jump from the 7 million performed in 2016.

This jump in BOTOX injections from 2016 to 2017 is impressive, but modest compared to the long-term trend. In 2000, BOTOX injections stood at less than 800,000. In other words, there was an astounding 819 percent growth in just 17 years.

Dermal Fillers Popularity

Soft tissue fillers include the following key anti-aging, skin rejuvenation treatments:

In 2017, there were nearly 2.7 million of these and other soft tissue filler treatments performed. The year before saw 2.6 million soft tissue filler injections, a three percent increase over 2017.

Much like BOTOX, the long view on soft filler trends shows a considerable rise in its popularity. Compared to 2000, there were about 650,000 soft filler injections administered, amounting to a 312 percent hike between then and 2017.

Age Demographics of BOTOX and Soft Tissue Filler Patients

Because BOTOX and soft tissue fillers are facial rejuvenation treatments that reverse the visible signs of aging, most patients who receive them are middle aged. That said, younger patients, sometimes in their teens, and older adults also receive these injectables.
