What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Dr. Baugh uses an erbium laser to gently vaporize the outermost layers of skin, where visible damage has occurred. This laser can treat deeper-level damage, including textural problems and moderate to deep wrinkles, that chemical peels and microdermabrasion cannot. It also stimulates the production of new collagen, which gives the skin a fuller appearance without the need for injectable treatments. While many patients use laser skin resurfacing as a facial rejuvenation treatment, it can safely be used to treat areas of the body other than the face, as well. The erbium laser keeps bruising and swelling to a minimum, and most patients heal relatively quickly after treatment. Generally, patients are able to conceal whatever redness remains from treatment with make-up within a week.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Candidacy
Laser skin resurfacing is intended for patients with significant skin imperfections. Patients with minor sun damage, discoloration, and wrinkling may be better suited to milder treatments such as microdermabrasion or one of our chemical peels. The best candidates for laser skin resurfacing include those who:
- Have good skin elasticity
- Have non-oily skin
- Do not scar easily
- Have previously undergone gentler treatments such as microdermabrasion to improve the appearance of wrinkles, lines, acne scars, and other skin imperfections without success
- Is in good overall health
- Has realistic expectations for the results they can achieve, which Dr. Baugh will help to establish
- Have lighter-toned skin (although the erbium laser poses less risk of skin discoloration to patients with darker skin tones than CO2 laser treatment)
- Are willing to follow all post-treatment instructions provided to them by Dr. Baugh to the absolute letter to ensure proper healing and the best possible results
