The Results of BOTOX® Injection Treatment By William P. Baugh on July 29, 2017

A woman touching her faceCountless patients in the greater Los Angeles area have come to our practice looking for ways to looking younger and appear more vibrant. While some turn to surgery, the use of dermal fillers has been growing in appeal. That helps explain the popularity of BOTOX® cosmetic injections, a fast non-surgical way of reducing wrinkles and looking years younger.

We'd like to take a moment to consider some BOTOX® injection basics, and then look at what results this treatment can achieve.

How BOTOX® Injections Work

BOTOX® injections are used to halt the muscle contractions in the face. This helps prevent the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which is to say wrinkles that form when a person makes different kinds of facial expressions. With muscle contractions stopped, wrinkles on the skin do not form or appear.

In addition to improving the appearance of the face, BOTOX® injections have a number of other medical uses that can help with various wellness issues.

Ideal Candidates for BOTOX® Injections

Good candidates for BOTOX® injections are people who suffer from dynamic wrinkles of various kinds. They should be in good health overall and not be allergic to BOTOX® cosmetic solution or experience adverse side effects to the solution. During the consultation process, we can determine if BOTOX® cosmetic would lead to severe side effects of contraindications of various kinds.

BOTOX® Injection Side Effects

While there is no downtime or time off from work that follows BOTOX® injection treatments, there are some minor side effects that patients should keep in mind. They are as follows:

  • Soreness or tenderness in the injection area
  • Redness or flushing around the injection area
  • Swelling of the face
  • Minor bruising
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache

These side effects are all quite mild in nature and resolve on their own with little post-treatment care. In the first day after getting BOTOX® injections, patients are asked to avoid touching their face to allow for faster recovery.

How Long Do BOTOX® Injection Results Last?

In general, the results of BOTOX® injections tend to last between 3 months to 6 months, and sometimes a bit longer. During this time, those dynamic wrinkles will not be an issue.

Can I Get Additional BOTOX® Injections?

Yes.

BOTOX® injections can be repeated after the effects of the initial BOTOX® treatment have worn off. This allows patients to experience non-surgical anti-aging for many months in a row.

How Do BOTOX® Injections Compare to Facial Surgery?

The results of BOTOX® injections compare favorably to that of facelift and other kinds of facial rejuvenation surgeries. While BOTOX® injections do not lead to permanent results, there is no scarring involved, and repeat treatments can be adjusted to address different problem areas of the face.

How Do BOTOX® Injections Compare to Dermal Fillers?

BOTOX® injections also compare favorably to dermal fillers, though it must be acknowledged that these cosmetic injectables work in different ways. BOTOX® injections are ideal for dynamic wrinkles, whereas dermal fillers are often more ideal for static wrinkles. Sometimes BOTOX® injections and dermal fillers can be combined to address different signs of facial aging.
