Treat Age Spots and Sun Damage to Improve the Appearance of the Skin By William P. Baugh on September 29, 2015

Woman with smooth, unblemished skinThere are many parts of the body that are susceptible to change as a person ages, but perhaps none is as obvious as the skin. The skin is highly vulnerable to damage and other imperfections because it is constantly exposed to the sun and other environmental elements. At his cosmetic dermatology practice, Dr. William P. Baugh offers treatments to address blemishes and improve the tone, texture, and overall appearance of the skin. Laser skin resurfacing to eliminate the top layer of skin and stimulate collage production is one of the treatments for age spots and sun damage offered to our Fullerton patients. Dr. Baugh is happy to help patients explore all of their options in regards to skin treatment in order to determine which is best suited to their unique needs.

Microdermabrasion is a facial that does not rely on chemicals or lasers to improve skin tone and texture. During treatment, a small vacuum device is used to circulate micro-crystals over the surface of the skin. This serves to remove the uppermost layer of the skin, where damage often lies. New, fresh skin will be revealed, giving patients a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment that may take several treatments to achieve maximum results. With repeated treatment, patients may see an improvement in the appearance of scars, fine lines, and discoloration. Microdermabrasion may be appropriate for patients with minor signs of sun damage or minimal age spots.

Photorejuvenation Facial

The photorejuvenation facial uses a Gemini™ Laser to give patients a more even skin tone. During treatment a dual-wavelength laser system works to allow the body to absorb hemoglobin and melanin (which are responsible for rosacea, age spots, and freckles) to minimize their appearance. Like microdermabrasion, patients should expect several treatments in order to achieve maximum results. Typically, patients require three to five treatment sessions that are scheduled about a month apart from each other. This treatment is particularly beneficial for patients with moderate to severe sun damage or age spots.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing uses cool light technology to vaporize the top layer of a patient’s skin and address imperfections that are deeper than those that can be treated with microdermabrasion. Treatment may take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours (depending on how large the treatment area is) and is performed using local anesthetic. Laser skin resurfacing serves to completely vaporize the top layer of skin while also stimulating collagen production. Combined, this serves to give patients improved skin tone and texture, while also helping to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Laser skin resurfacing treatment is ideal for all types of sun damage and age spots.
