How Long Does JUVÉDERM® Last? By William P. Baugh on August 23, 2020

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments because they deliver impressive results without surgery. At Full Spectrum Dermatology in Fullerton, CA, Dr. William P. Baugh administers JUVÉDERM® to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose, including marionette lines and vertical lip lines.

How long does JUVÉDERM last? In most cases, results last anywhere from 12 to 24 months. In this article, we will answer this question in more detail and offer recommendations for maintaining your results.

Results Can Vary for Every Patient

As with any cosmetic treatment, individual results depend on the patient and the type of filler used. There are other factors involved, too. For example, results can be influenced by:

  • Specific treatment area
  • How long it takes your body to metabolize the filler material
  • How much filler material is injected

JUVÉDERM offers a few different formulas, and results vary for each one. Here is a general guide:

  • JUVÉDERM Voluma: Approximately 24 months with possible touchup treatment at one year
  • JUVÉDERM Ultra and Ultra Plus: About one year, with possible touchup around the six-month mark
  • JUVÉDERM Vollure: Approximately one year to 18 months
  • JUVÉDERM Volbella: About one year

How JUVÉDERM Works

JUVÉDERM fillers are made from hyaluronic acid. Though the material is synthetic, it is designed to mimic the hyaluronic acid that is already present in the skin.

Once your treatment is complete, the dermal filler begins to slowly degrade over time. This is not readily noticeable, however, because the filler material absorbs water, keeping the skin looking plump and healthy.

Approximately halfway through the expected time duration, patients typically notice reduced volume. This means that a filler intended to last for 12 months will start to show noticeable signs of decreased volume after six months. At this point, a minor touchup procedure is recommended to help maintain and extend overall results.

As a general rule, JUVÉDERM results last longer in treatment areas that are not prone to excessive movements. For example, results will not last as long around the lips – which are highly mobile – compared to more static areas of the face.

How to Prolong Your Results

First, it is important to understand that touchup treatments are necessary to maximize results. Talk to Dr. Baugh about how often to consider touchup treatments. A good rule of thumb is to schedule an appointment at our Fullerton office as soon as you notice the effects wearing off.

Secondly, practice excellent skin care hygiene at home to make the most of your JUVÉDERM results. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Moisturize your skin daily.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Take any necessary supplements.
  • Wear sunscreen any time you go outdoors.
